I just looked at the A3, wow! expensive, and it doesn't seem to be half the car that my 01 Avant is. The materials, the fit and finish,even what comes as standard is less than my B5 and it cost a lot more! I don't get it.

...compared to new 3-Series...wow, lame.
There are bright red examples of both cars about 15 feet apart on my dealers' showroom floor. Wow, I'm glad I don't need a new car. I sat in the BMW and...umm, at least they fixed the console over the previous gen. Same price as A3. $30k-$33k. I waited my whole life for A3 to come to USA and now I'd rather get the BMW for the same money.
