Default Add me to the Coil Pack failure list :(

Driving home from the train station today .. the MIL light came on and the car was idling really rough. I was able to run at reduced speed in 2nd gear, but that was about it. I was only about 2 miles from home so I decided to keep going (might not have been the smartest move). I live about 6 miles from my Audi dealer.. should I just drive it at reduced speed there tomorrow, or should I call a flat bed to come get it?

Just for the records, my build date is 01/02 and I have about 9000 miles on it.

I thought heat was the culprit for the failures? It's been raining and cold in Philly lately.

Default I don't think we've drawn any heat conclusions yet (m)

I have never experienced any heat in the foot wells that others have mentioned. And I believe that others have had the coil pack failures without having the heat problem.

Obviously, in Philly .. the heat from the weather has not been an issue recently as you mentioned.

Default Flat bed it. Also please let us know how it turns out so we can add you to the log.

One of the guys who drove it a few miles with a failed ignition coil (coil pack) said there was a burning smell, he opened the hood, and the exhaust manifold was glowing cherry red. I'm guessing that the fuel mixture that wasn't burning in the cylinder was burning in the manifold (anyone have any other ideas?).

Default Thing is, Im worried it could get into the cat, but im sure they have systems

that would just take the excess fuel and dump it, as a pretection measure against this very kind of thing.

Default Why risk flatbedding damage, have the dealer send a tech with new coil to your house

I sure would have that done if they were only 6 miles from me!

Default The O2 sensor will lean it out as far as it can and still be driveable....

to prevent CAT damage. It's too bad a failed coil just doesn't totally destroy the engine($$$M's)....maybe Audi would have second thoughts about not responding to owners pleas for a recall.

Now that would be great if you could get them to do it.

Default My cat was red hot........

After my first coil failure, I imediately pulled over and looked under the hood. What I saw was my catalytic converter glowing red hot. It's a 2002 A4 1.8T. My cat now has a really cool blueish brown color.
