Default Advice please

I have a 2004 A4 1.8t with 90,000 miles on it. Is it better to run full synthetic oil or semi synthetic oil designed for higher mileage cars ? Since I don't have a garage I want the best oil for cold weather starts and driving.

thanks

I would stick full synthetic. I have not seen real data to back this up, but I believe the general consensus is to stick with a particular type of oil and vary the weight depending on temp, mileage etc. Others jump in if they have different opinion experience. Example, I ran 20w50 Castrol in my 84 Nissan Turbo for 25 years. Recently switched to 10w40 to quiet a lifter (backwards from what I would have thought) and would never consider part or full synthetic. I just have 2000 to 2500 mile change intervals. The old 65 Ford (390 cu in V8) always has and always will get straight 30 weight.

As far as weight, where do you live?

If you are in an area with cold winters, I'd go with 5-40 or even 0-40 Mobil 1; full synthetic in both cases.

Okay, so cold, but not bitter cold like Canada. I would be tempted to go to an approved 0w30 if I were outside in Canada. I would stick with Mobil 1 0w40 full syn. Others?

Hmmm, I am assuming Old Guy is me??? Don't like to leave unanswered questions so; I use, actually the dealer uses, Castrol 5-40. At home the car is always parked in the garage. However, since it is my wife's daily commute it will sit outdoors for at least 8 hours on workdays.

Yes siree, very different there in TEXAS .

Yes, sorry, should have been Old Dog. Sort of like when I call one of my wife's friends Laura instead of Lori. Get's my wife's goat.
