Air Conditioning
I can't get the air to work in my 2002 3.0 quattro. No matter how often I push in the "ECON" button the light stays on and the air stays warm. I checked the fuse, per the manual' and it's fine. Does this mean the compressor is dead?

is your temperature reading off?
If it reads below 40 degrees fahrenheit, the compressor does not turn on.
If your econ light is stuck on, sounds like your control unit for the climate control is messed up, not your compressor. Did you try the front window defrost? That turns on AC too.

if the econ button stays on it usually means the car is intentionally turning the compressor off . .
this is usually due to a low pressure reading in the system. you probably have a small leak in the AC system causing the pressure drop . . . dealer visit. or fill it yourself, but be warned that if it is leaking then it will leak out again . . .

this sounds very familiar...
I got a leak in my condenser. It's the foremost radiator-looking grill in the front of your vehicle. All those little ridges in it are VERY pliable, and if a big enough rock hits it or something it may pop a leak. This was basically the case for my car, and I had to replace the condenser (about $800 parts & labor).
