OK, so this is not a big deal by any means but, has anybody noticed that snowflake that shows up next to the temperature reading when the temperature drops below 40 degrees? Has anybody also noticed that the snowflake disappears when the temperature drops below 22 degrees? I read the manual and it mentions that the snowflake is supposed to caution you about the possibility of ice on the road. The thing I don't understand is, why have this caution only for temps between 22 and 40 degrees?! Do the Germans think there won't be ice on the road when the temp drops BELOW 22 degrees?? Goofy isn't it?

It represents temperatures that would most likely lead to snow

Default Perhaps it's this...

if the computer registers temperature change, the snowflake may appear because between those temps it's most likely ice will form on the road. Say the current road conditions are dry, but the temp is dropping as a storm moves in, or as you drive up a pass. If there's any humidity in the air, it will start to form ice on surfaces that are nearing 32F (and this can happen with air temperatures above freezing, since ground or metal surfaces often lose heat faster than air). Once air temp drops below freezing, water vapor will drop out and freeze onto surfaces. Under 22 deg., it's unlikely more ice will form from freezing condensation, unless there's additonal precip, which will raise the temp anyway. Unless you're in the arctic, most snow falls between 25-35, so perhaps the indicator reflects temps most likely for snow.
Perhaps too much info...what I remember from a meteorology class

Default Re: snowflakes

my mother told me that, of all the billions of snowflakes that have ever fallen, every snowflake is different. but it seems like audi snowflakes are IDENTICAL! is there a conspiracy here???

Kurt the meteoroligist is right. You get more ice at temps closer to freezing - above or below..

Default At very low temps, there's no need for a warning. ..

it's at the intermediate (near 32 deg.) temps that people get caught unawares by ice.

Default Think it's for peeps plodding along in the wet at 40 degrees, let them know ice is possible (more)

If it's 20-something, you know for damn sure that anything that was water on the road is now ice.

If you have the sport tires on your car a skull and crossbones replace the snowflake.

It's to alert you when your in the grey zone. If it's -20 they assume you know its winter.
