Default Is the coil problem real bad, and what exactly happens

I am just reading some threads and found out about the coil issues. I just got a new A4 1.8T should I go back to the dealer and have them put in new coils right away? What happens when they go?

Default The engine will start to vibrate and the Check Engine light will start blinking...

If it happens while driving, continue slowly to a safe spot, pull over and call Roadside Assistance for a flatbed.

No point in going back to your dealer - the replacement parts are identical (ie, just as failure-prone) as the originals. My service manager said they're working on a revision.

Default Ok, in AoA's defense, maybe that's why they're holding off on a recall - the revised coil isn't (m)

ready yet. If they undertake a huge recall on something that affects drivability but don't have the fix ready, they would get horrible bad press.

...And that would be why AoA doesn't want to replace all the plugs in cars that have one fail. It would just use up the supply of replacements faster and they'd just be putting failure-prone ones in that would need to be replaced again later anyway.

Of course, if all that is true, then they should be working 24/7 to get the revised part done and in high production numbers, should be communicating with dealers better, etc...

Default You could be right.

I hope their solution ends up being a simple swap with just a new coil pack. But if it were that easy, I think they'd have newly designed coil pack by now.

I hate to think of the alternative solution which might be to re-design other engine parts that the coil pack interacts with. If that does become the case, it would be costly and could get ugly.
