Conspiracy! first Consumer Reports and now Road and Track
How could this happen, both reviews claim the A4 cabin is "cramped"? We dismissed the review from Consumer Reports as a publisher who also tests toasters, and now this from a publisher (Hachette-Filipacchi) who also publishes such greats as "Elle", "Car and Driver", "American Photo", "Cycle World", and "Woman's Day".
They both happened to notice that the weight/power ratio puts the new Audi at a disadvantage over the competition! Scandal!
Should we enthusiasts put up with this? WE are the only group who have a right to criticize the A4! Who do those "journalists" think they are!

Cramped..Huh? Here's an Audi/BMW/MB Comparo:
If CR/RT said the A4 is "cramped", it just doesn't jive with the numbers. Below are space comparisons for three models in the the same size class: the Audi A4, BMW 330, and Mercedes C240. Numbers alone, they appear very similar:
Model A4 / 330i / C240
Cargo Capacity/ 13 cf. /10 cf./12.2 cf.
Wheelbase 104.3" / 107.3" / 106.9"
Length 179.0" / 176.0" / 178.3"
Height 56.2" / 56.5" / 55.1"
Width 69.5" / 68.5" / 68.0"
Front Headroom 38.4" / 38.4" / 38.9"
Front Legroom 41.3" / 41.4" / 41.7"
Rear Legroom 34.3" / 34.6" / 33.0"

Depends on how you measure....front seat all the way back?
Granted the previous A4 was not huge in the back.
But the 2002 seems quite generous. But not if you have the front seats all the way back - then there is precious little. But I'm 6'3" and NEVER have the seat all the way back, and there is plenty of legroom.
Dont forget the 2002 A4 has a high sill line (the bottom of the windows) which adds to the 'cramped' perception.

They were not talking about legroom!
Both reviews are discussing the way the centre console rests against your right knee (for those Down Under, the left knee).
They had no problem with the seat position as you both have pointed out, but rather the fact that when driving, your leg rests uncomfortably against the leg bolster. In my case, the bony part of my knee rests on the part of the console where the plastic is hardest. I find it difficult to find a place to put my leg while on cruise control.
