Couple observations from a former 01 owner...
I changed the oil on my 02 this weekend (2000 miles - oil was black) and noticed a few things (1.8TQMSXP):
1. The car is LOW... I wouldn't recommend lowering the car any - likely to bash the cast pan and cause much regret
2. Changing the oil is a PITA - there are a zillion screws to take off the under tray (similar to previous).
3. The 'vented fender liner mod' would be pretty much a waste of time since the washer tank blocks the whole back side of the intercooler - It looks like a FMIC is a must if upgrading.
4. There is a hose that goes from the bypass valve to the motor mount casting - what the heck is THAT for?
5. What the heck are people talking about 'felt' fender liners? my front ones are plain old polypropylene or whatever just like before...
Well, thats it...

Did you really change the oil at 2000 miles? You could be in for some problems down the line.
The service manual and the service techs strongly recommend that the oil not be changed until the first scheduled service interval. There have been many discussions about this on AudiWorld (over on the '01 forum). From what I recall, Audi puts some special additives in the factory oil to help things like the seals & gaskets during the first 5000 miles. I have heard of problems down the line (related to early oil changes) with head gaskets not seating properly (or something similar). Perhaps Audi has changed things to not require this initial period, but you may want to do some searches here or talk to your service department.

Re: Oil goes black almost right away and it does not indicate that it needs to be changed
hmmm, maybe..
Oil turning black indicates to me that it is doing its job by isolating junk.... therefore, time to change...
