Couple questions, '04 1.8tqa GIAC Stage 1.....
1. Under heavy boost I hear some faint ticks when driving next to a wall or high curb with the window down. I'm hoping it isn't pinging and rather some solenoid (N75) or DV sound. I always run 93 octane on the 91-93 perfomance program. Any ideas?
2. Also under boost, I get some weird smell coming into the cabin. It smells like a clutch burning smell, although very faint. I did the clutch test, 30 mph 5th gear clutch dump at 5000 rpms, I can pretty much hold it at high rpm as long as I want = slipping clutch. I just wouldn't imagine it would slip at 60 mph in 5th or 6th gear on the highway when I accelerate moderately. I can't really decipher if it is the clutch or some other burning smell. Any ideas?
Thanks Tom

Who told you how to "test" the clutch that way?...
"30 mph 5th gear clutch dump at 5000 rpms, I can pretty much hold it at high rpm as long as I want = slipping clutch."
That is not a test, that is abuse IMO.
Listening to sounds from a wall drive by can be deceiving, but to confirm that your setup is not knocking/detonating, log the ignition timing knock correction values with a VAG-COM.

I read it on here, I only did it as a test, not regularly, that would be abuse....
I do need to get Vag-Com along with a laptop.
Great Xmas idea.

No no no...not dump at 5k rpms, eek. Get to 30 MPH and shift into 5th then lay on the gas
to see if the RPMs go up or not. If the RPMs shoot up, then you're clutch is slipping. If the RPMs don't shoot up, you're clutch is fine.
Don't go dumping it at 5k...just put into 5th when you reach 30mph and step on it.

OK OK, clutch seems to hold pretty well that way....
but I know it's on it's way out. I'm the 2nd owner at 42,000 miles and who knows how the previous owner treated the clutch. If I dumped the clutch while rolling at 30 mph in 5th gear, wouldn't a "good" clutch catch and bog immediately? I know how to make a clutch last, my '89 200tqa went over 200,000 miles on the stock clutch before replacement, and that was due to a munched TO bearing. I just feel that the stock A4 clutch is suspect to early failure, as I've read many stories on here. My Audi tech has seen them go before 5000 miles.
