Default Dealer couldn't find anything regarding coil pack issue...

brought the car in after experiencing a very rough idle, no check engine light though...dealer checked the ECU, no codes were thrown...they said the engine is running perfect...question is, is what I experienced symptomatic of the coil issue? Can I expect to have the same thing happen again, except this time hopefully there will be a CEL? What should I do? I'm very close to just replacing the coil packs on my own...I don't have the time or patience to sit around and wait for these damn things to fail!

Default Are you running rough when engine is cold?

If so, lots of people have experienced rough idle when the engine is cold. Generally the idle is stable at around 1100 rpm, but considerably louder than normal. After about a minute for me, it quiets down to its normal level.

Default No...the issue I had was an extremely rough, violent idle...

it sounded like the engine was falling apart

Default Seattle3.0 had a problem like that, but it was very often, if I recall (more)

It wasn't the ignition coils, and it didn't start showing misfires until later, so the dealer/AoA couldn't figure out what else to do than replace the cylinder head. Because it went on for so long, I think they ended up doing a buy back on the car before replacing the head though. See the link to one of the threads he had about it... And do a search for his other threads.

I have a 3.0 and haven't had any problem like that so far. The idle is a little rough at times, but nowhere near what Seattle3.0 experienced.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/108562.phtml

Default Re: Dealer couldn't find anything regarding coil pack issue...

I talked to the mechanic at the dealership that serviced Seattle3.0's car. They still don't know what is going on. According to the guy (John) there are a handfull of cars that have this problem and there is no fix for it yet.

Matthew, I'm having the same prob with my car. My dealer isn't doing squat about it though.
