Discuss: The 1.8T is an overperforming engine (warning: rambling post)
While certainly not fast, the 1.8T definitely holds its own (doesnt get completely left in the dust) when compared to more powerful engines. Example: I can keep up with my friend's V6 Mazda 6 (manual tranny) just fine and i have a tip. Aside from the difficulty of getting off the line quickly, once the car is above 25 mph, acceleration is brisk (not fast, dont get me wrong). Or maybe its just me acclimatizing to the car after driving it for 5 months now, because every time i go for a ride in my mom's CL55 or me dad's 911 C4S it throws my sense of speed all out of whack. The CL55 makes my car feel like a garbage truck, that thing accelerates in 5th gear from 80-110 faster than my car does in 1st from 20-30. So, in the end, speed is relative. Sorry for the rambling post.

I agree. Not looking for a dragstrip car. In its powerband...
Between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm, where most of my daily driving is done, the engine has sufficient power and even feels "fun"!

Yup... A4 needs to lose 1000 lbs. to be serious w/ 1.8T (more)
Lotus Elise has a modest motor (U.S. Spec ones will have a Toyota Celica GT-S motor, I think)
But it is light as a feather.
Our cars just aren't very flingable cuz Germans like heft while driving at Autobahn speeds to keep them planted.
911's are over 3000lbs. and they could stand to lose some weight too.

I have driven the GTI and that thing flies with the 1.8T
Considering that the A4 weighs +/- 600 pounds more explains the performance loss. However for a 3600 pound car, the little 1.8 does a decent job towing it around.

I agree too
1.8T is respectible but a few pounds of the scale will really help audi position the A4 much much better.
honda s2000 has a 2.2 liter engine, but man it will kick anyones *** in its class.
the same with mazda 6.
also, the irony of your post is that you have all high powered engines in your garage. What you doing with a 1.8T :-). It must feel like a horse carriage compared to the others.

it's weak. MBs 1.8L kompressor out performs it. 170HP in a 3600 lb car? ridiculous!
if audi can put a 225hp 1.8t in the TT, what the hell is thier problem? even the jetta has 180hp. the A4 should have had 200hp as a min.
