Default Front Window Failure -- HELP

I'm new to the site, so excuse my limited knowledge.

I have a 2005 1.8T I bought new and both of my front windows have stopped working. There was a grinding sound and now the driver won't budge, but I can hear motor working. And passanger window will go down, but not up. I can also hear that motor working. My cousin, who is a car guy, says it is a defective plastic acuator(sp)that he has replaced on his VW's three times. I got a quote from an Audi shop at $364 per window. Is this fair? I would like to be able to buy the parts and get somone to install for a fair price, but I am flying blind. Any help would be great.

Basically its your window regulators. That quote seems right, but...you can order the regulators online for approx $120-$150 and do it yourself. http://www.autohausaz.com/ is the site I use often.

Just make sure someone is there to assist. Although its possible to do it yourself, sometimes it can be a little tricky as the window and the motor etc is all one piece, so I hear. Let me know how it goes.

I've had to replace a couple regulators on my '02. The motor comes off before you take out the window. It's not that difficult of a process, but an extra set of hands is helpful for removing and reinstalling the glass. If you DIY, just make sure to pick up some extra plastic clips that hold on the door panel in order to save you from an extra trip to the dealer.

I've had the same problem but I fixed it instead of replacing the regulator, there is a green clip that grabs a metal piece crimped to the cable. The clip breaks allowing the wire to move up and down without the window. I used zipties and epoxy to re-attach the clip to the wire. It's been working fine for over a year.

The messed up thing is that the green clip attaches to the regultor but of course audi only sells them together.

This fix was actually easier than replacing the regulator and a lot cheaper.

I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip!
