Fuel Filter- Lifetime???

Fuel Filter- Lifetime???
I can't figure why Audi would put the preasure regulator in the fuel filter and then say the filter is lifetime. I have always changed fuel filters every 15-30K. I have over 50K now and wondering if I should. Audi mechanics look at me and say "Audi says it's lifetime" and shrug thier shoulders. Thoughts?

I found out most mfgs are going to this design.
I can't figure out why though. Where does the dirt go... It has to eventually clogg the flow of fuel. Plus, these filters are expensive too.
