Hard to downshift into first
I'm a big fan of 'eggshell' shifting; this entails never forcing the shifter into a gate, but rather holding the shifter at a gate until the shifter 'pops in' automatically. I've found this especially useful for dealing with stop signs.
When coming to a stop at a stop sign:
1)I slow down. Once my rpms are low (~5mph), I push the clutch down and move the shifter to the edge of the first gear gate, while being careful not to apply much pressure to the shifter.
2)I continue to slow down until the gear pops into first by itself. If not making a complete stop, the time at which the gear pops into place by itself is the exact time at which my car has come to a 'almost complete stop' -- perhaps, just enough of a 'stop' for a stop sign.
3)I let the clutch out and accelerate.
I find the above technique is useful even when coming to a full stop. For example, when making a left turn from a stop sign, you can parallelize: 1)Looking for oncoming cars, 2)Holding the gear at the gate and waiting for it to pop in, and 3)coming to a full stop. When all three are done, you're in first, have looked out for all oncoming cars, and are ready to accelerate.
