Default Hello! Looking to buy '02 Audi A4 1.8T Q

Hey guys,

I found a used 2002 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro for sale. Blue ext/Gray int. Has 160,000 miles on it, great condition exterior and interior. It did have two minor (reported) accidents though. KBB says around ~5k for the vehicle.

Anyways, I want to know what I should look out for mechanically. Do Audi A4's have any 'known' issues to look out for?

The timing belt should be changed ever 75k they are know to break before they are supposed to be replaced at 100k. make sure it has had regular oil changes there is also a known engine sludge. I have had a 2002 (96k miles)1.8t Q over a 6 year period the only things i have had go wrong with it are my steering rack replaced due to a leak, control arms needing to be replaced, window regulator(also a very common problem). by the way were you at I'm looking at selling mine soon.

That pretty much covers it. You can throw the coolant flange in to that mix. I would also take it to a VW / Audi guys and have them give you an assessment.

$5k is a bit much for a car with that many miles.

Find out if they've ever had the front end/steering serviced. With those miles, I'd expect it would need all the control arms replaced as well as the tie rod ends and the struts all around.

It should also have had the timing belt changed TWICE by now. If it hasn't been changed in the last 75k miles, that would be the very first order of business. A few hundred in parts and a day's labor if you do it yourself. $800-1200 to have someone else do it for you.

Check to see how often the oil was changed and (hopefully) if they used synthetic oil. Longer change intervals or the use of conventional oil could lead to some sludge inside the engine and might mean the turbo is at the *** end of its life.

The diverter valve is probably also shot at this juncture. Get a new 710N valve. They're about $40 online.

That's off the top of my head. These engines will last a LONG time, but you've got to stay on top of the routine maintenance.

Best,
