HELP !! Dealer said my ECU needs to be replaced and I have a chip...
My check engine light came on last week so I made an appointment at the dealer. Took the car in yesterday and they ran the codes and it says the ECU needs to be replaced. At that point, I told my service guy not to do it because the car is chipped. Now I'm in a dilema. I should have just kept my mouth shut and let them replace the ECU because apparently you can show proof to APR that your ECU was replaced and get a new chip for $50. Now it's too late and they won't do it. The car seems to be running fine and they cleared the codes for me but the check engine light came right back on.
Any suggestions...??

What is the code that is showing? If you get that info you might want to ask APR
What the code means or what you could do.
A lot of times the dealer will just swap and ECU as a first troubleshooting step because they don't want to diagnose the situation properly.
Sounds like you need a VAG scanner.

Re: HELP !! Dealer said my ECU needs to be replaced and I have a chip...
I have been chipped for over a year now - it is just a stage 1 on a 2002 A4. The only other mod is the hyperboost diverter valve. The dealer said it showed a "Faulty ECU" and that it needed replacement.
On my invoice it said "Found DTC: P0601"
My local chip supplier is out of business, unfortunately, so I called the next closest one which is 4 hours away. I guess I need to call them back and see if they can contact APR for me.
I have 40K on the car and have never had any problems to speak of. Thanks for any help you guys may have.

They seem to be correct. Here is what my service manual says
P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error
Corrective Action: Replacing Engine Control Module (ECM)
I still think you need to call APR and let them know what is going on. They may want you to ship them your ECU.

I had the same exact thing happen to me about a month ago, this is what I did-
Took it to one dealer, they wouldnt do anything since it was chipped. Took it back to the local APR dealer and put the stock chip back in. I then took it to a different dealer and they fixed it by putting a new ECU in. I had to wait 2 weeks for the ECU to come in though. The APR dealer said other APR chipped cars (all 02's, all VW's though) had similar problems. My car ran fine though with the CEL.
