High Pitched Hum when gas is low?

High Pitched Hum when gas is low?
Hi, I have a 2004 3.0L A4 Quattro. I bought this car used a couple of months ago. I noticed when the gas guage gets down to about 1/8th, sometimes when I push the accelerator, there will be a faint high-pitched hum coming from the mid-to-rear area of the car. It's rather annoying. After I fill up the car, the noise is gone completely. Is this common, anyone know what it is, and how I can get rid of it?

Then 3 months later June 2009 (84,223 miles) same thing, the previous owner had the same noise happen and the record says, "found an extremely noisy fuel pump, upon removal of fuel line, it broke, had to replace line. And they replaced the fuel filter (again. - not sure how necessary that was being it was just replaced 3 months ago).
Now 2.5 years later, at 113k miles, it's back i guess. How come it keeps happening. Hope it's just the filter and not the pump. Pump and filter should last longer than 2.5 years and 28k miles
shouldn't it?
Also, how come the humming noise only happens when i'm low on gas (1/8 tank or less)?

Yes it should last longer but maybe you have very dirty gas in your area. Fuel is used to lubricate/cool the fuel pump. When level is low there isn't as much lubricant around? As the fuel level drops, the fuel tank probably acts as an echo chamber making any noise that exists sound louder. General consensus is don't run your fuel tank low.

I ordered a fuel filter, and will see what happens when I change that.

I've ordered a fuel filter MANN wk730/1. From the picture there is one 'pipe' on each end. I'm looking at other filters on the page and some have 2 pipes on one end. Did i order the wrong part? Is the filter supposed to have 1 or 2 connections pipes on each end?
