hmmm Hitachi coil pack failure? going about 60 and CEL starts flashing, losing power and vibrations

Not really, there are three primary criteria that must be satisfied...
for the engine to run properly:
There must be fuel, but not to much, or to little.
There must be air(oxygen) in the correct proportion to the fuel, (mass basis)
There must be a properly timed ignition source.
If any one of the above requirements is not present, then the misfires will occur.
It's a process of elimination checking the systems responsible for the fuel/air/spark, to identify and remedy the problem causing the symptoms.

can't really eliminate any unless i get a better code. could be hitachi, could be lean
air is not as likely with a new filter on 45k car.
changed fuel filter and going to clean maf next week, hopefully it won't pop again.

Yeah, if the symptoms are not presently occuring, it's really not possible to
troubleshoot a non existing problem as a practical matter. The only chance there is, would be ready to grab a freeze frame with a VAG-COM when/if it happens again.
One thing to consider, there is no direct evidence the coilpacks are involved, the associated chain of events, and the symptoms are inconsistent with the cause involving the coilpacks. For example, the DTC that was recorded, as only Multiple misfires, it is VERY unlikely, that ALL of the cps malfunctioned briefly, but work OK now.
That is just not the way coilpacks fail. It is more likely that something common to all of the cylinders like fuel or air supply was involved, as a minor glitch anywhere before the injectors, in the fuel supply would effect all cylinders about equally, thus the multiple misfires DTC without any one cylinder being involved specifically.
