Default Ralphie - I know exactly what you mean

I'm driving in tip mode in second gear, and right as it nears 3000 rpm with the gas pedal down with constant force, the rpm ...as it goes up....dips down a bit and then goes back up normally...

I asked my dealer about this on Saturday actually.
They said it was normal. Something about the 5th valve opening up in the engine, and when it does that, the rpm will dip a little. Something about exhaust valve or something something. I'm no mechanic, but everything my dealer has told me as so far checked out....so, I have no issues.

My 2000 A4 manual does that when it's cold...it's fine after a couple of minutes. Could it be that?

Default Sound like traction control helping you regain lost grip, or engine management dealing with

detenation by retarding ignition.

Just some thoughts...

The detonation idea is pretty good. I think I have 94 octane in my tank right now though. maybe not.

Default Ralphie

I noticed that at 2800ish rpm the engine increases torque and its seems like the other link, that the 5th valve? might be opening, like a power band, but I do not see a signifigant drop in RPM, maybe a studder when it is transitioning. I did find it difficult to maintain 1000rpm in second gear, it would keep dropping to 1 when i dropped the trottle, but YES i have the same issue, if you classify this as an issue
