Need to add about 1/2 quart or so of oil (2200 miles, 1.8T). Can I add synthetic to the dino? Is
this of any benefit or just a waste of money, until I change it out completely at 5000 miles?

If you check your manual, says they used 0W-30.....
Mine says that, and it has been discussed on this forum a lot. I just added Mobil One 0W-30 Tri-Synthetic. I needed about half a quart, I have around 2500 miles. I am hoping that was the way to go! I think we just have to keep using the same oil that we put in it consistently.
