OT. This could be my next car......
Voila a Spyder a la VW. A no frills roadster built for the enthusiast driver in mind in other words a driver's car. It will use the new "modular technology" platform from the Golf V. Could be produced in 2005.
Specifications
- Mid engine, rear wheel drive.
- A two litre 4 cylinder 150 hp FSI engine.
- No power steering or electric windows.
- Four air bags, ESP and ABS standard.
- 0 to 60mph in 6 seconds and 150 mph top speed.
- Chassis construction will consist of light
- weight materials including, aluminium,
- high-strength steel, COMPOSITES and
- CARBONFIBRES.
- target curb weight of only 700 kg(1500 lbs)
- price in the UK around 16,000 pounds but we
- know that cars here cost less then in Europe.
I'm hoping VW will make yhis car for one and then bring it to North America at a reasonable price. I for one might be a buyer.

Is it the Concept-R, or something else (m)
This week's Autoweek has a photo of a very similar VW-badged roadster to debut next week at Frankfurt but they call it Concept-R. They spec it as follows:
Two seater, rear driver
mid-engine 15 degree V-6 DIG,
261hp@ 6250, 253 ftlb@ 2800
0-62mph around 5.2sec
Steel body (rather than Al and composite)
I would speculate that to bring the car in as cheap as you (and I) would like, they'd have to stick with a steel construction. Aluminum is just too expensive still. They also state a 2.0 I-4 would be offered. Trans would also be the 6spd double clutch DSG.
Either way, I agree it would be very nice to see here.

I'd like to get something like that..
but perhaps a little bigger (ie; about Boxster size). Any small convertible like that gets the kiss of death here in America, because they automatically get stigmatized as a chick car. No matter how good it drives, it always happens.
I want a second car that's German and a convertible so I can take it out on the weekends during a sunny summer day. I don't need AC, heat, power windows, motorized top, cupholders, etc.. Just give me a fine engine, suspension, wheels, and some seats and I'll be all set.

I like this one better.

Actually, the engine choice shown in the concept car is solely for the
Frankfurt autoshow. It could house a variety of different engines and transmission choices. Look for a 200hp 2.0T version as well.
