question....

so i was just helping a friend of mine fix her car (range rover) and i noticed that her oil was pretty high (~3/4 inch above the top mark on the dipstick)...she said that it was filled that high because the engine goes through oil pretty quick...will the extra oil be a problem for her and if so, what would the symptoms be? thanks

depends on the motor, but potentially the oil will go through the exhaust system and foul up the cat

Too much oil = no bueno, you should add as needed.

Even worse.....

If the oil in the sump gets so high that it hits the crankshaft it will get whipped up into a froth. Froth = air in oil, oil pump pumps oil, not air = no lubrication = $$$$$$$.

One overfill is ok, if it's always over it's a problem.Consumption is due to the wrong light oil :o(

The overfilled oil will burn off faster anyway!Either use a 5w-40 synth year-round or the other way is to use as heavy an oil as climate will allow. 15w-40 diesel-rated oil that cleans great (Delvac 1300, Dello 400, Rotella or Pennzoil LL) or even a 20w-50 is a cheap way to get through summer(down to even 0 degrees for the Delvac 15w-40, Pennzoil LL is the heaviest 15w-40 HDEO). For winter, a lighter hi-quality 5w-30 dino oil like Pennzoil, Chevron Supreme or GTX (Hi-Mi?!) is bare minimum, winter only though! In summer heat, even the best 5w-30, like she is probally using now, will not work well. Ultimately, there is no substitute for a 5w-40 synth, except the 5w-50 Syntec which would be the best overall choice for year-round, imo. Tell her def to look for the new Mobil 1 SUV 5w-40 available soon, it is repackaged Delvac-1 her consumption will be about one-fourth of what shop oil does. If she really does not want to spend on the synth (changed every 6 months, up to 9000 mi), the amazing Syntec Blend 10w-40 will work all-year and is A3-rated for $2. A3 test is 280 hours in an oil-eating machine without make-up oil. API SL test is like 25 hours with make-up oil, big difference.
