I was driving my A4 B6 6MT today, and all of a sudden the transaxle stopped doing anything when I push the shifter to the left or right, leaving me with nothing but 3rd and 4th gears.
The shifter will move all the way from one side to the other and back whether it’s forward as in 1st gear, or back as in 4th gear.
I haven’t had a chance to investigate yet, but it seems to work fine in the 2 gears I still have, so I’m hoping it’s a shifter issue that will be somewhat easily sorted rather than an internal trans issue.
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get underneath and see if you can look at the shift linkages...sometimes those buggers fall out...the bummer part is you may need to remove the heat shield/belly tray to see better...see attached photo...you can see where the shift linkages are found on side of transmission...

This fell to the floor last week when I replaced my steering rack. Would it have something to do with securing the cross rod?

It sure would. It may be this clip. But it looks a little different.
