Default Small oil filter leak...filter gasket/seal no good?

Changed the oil last Thursday and afterwards notice there was a small leak coming from the backside (flat end) of the oil filter. It collects inside the outer metal ring on the bottom of the filter. Last time I changed the oil I don't recall having a leak of any kind. I didn't crank it down to much...just two hand tight, so I know its on there. Anyways I thought maybe it would seal up after heating up some, but after driving the car on Monday I noticed I was still getting the build up at the bottom of the filter.

Not really thinking about it, the filter has been sitting in my trunk since probably June of last year. Is it possible/probable that the gasket has failed due to the extreme weather conditions? I'm probably just going to put a new filter on and see what happens, but I'm wondering if theres something else going on.

Perhaps the rubber gasket dried out? Did you put some oil on the gasket prior to putting it on?

Default Guess I'll try to back it off and then retighten. So the gasket shouldn't breakdown or lose...

effectiveness?

Default Do you prime the gasket with oil before you put it on?

I don't remember why but for some reason, I just remember someone telling me to always do that.

Yeah, that's what I learned too. To prevent the gasket from drying out due to the surrounding heat?
