Default Whether or not that picture is fake or not, it is possible.
That is how Mark Lovell and Roger Freeman from the North American Subaru team died in a Rally last year. They hit a turn and the drivers door went straight into a tree. IIRC both died on impact. Depending on physics (mostly the size of the tree), a tree may act as a knife cutting a car in half, or as a wall causing a spread out impact to the side of a car.
