Default Split Second Boost Controller - Redux...

There are many, many reviews for the Split Second Boost Controller on
http://www.vwvortex.com. 90% of these are very positive. I suspect a few
of the negative experiences are due to operator error ( installation problems).
My controller arrives Friday, hopefully I can provide a review by Sunday. Where
else can you get 40HP and a boost gauge for 250.00? Those who poo-poo
the idea of a BCS probably have never tried it. It also seems everybody
thinks they are a "chip tuner" and have all the answers, but no experience.
I suggest everyone approach BCS with an open mind.

Default I'm installing one too.... (more)

I started to install it last nite and discovered tamperproof screws on the metal ECU cover and a non removeable bracket over the small connector. How do we get around this? Instructions do not cover this. I also had to remove the drivers side wiper arm to gain access to the rear screw on the plastic ECU cover. I plan to mount mine below the dash in the shelf. where do we feed the wires through the firewall??

Default you do know that you might run into some small problems..

one being that you are not maximizing the way the engine runs because you are only controlling boost and not air/fuel management. Both are necessary when attempting to turn up the boost otherwise you will be working your turbo excessivly hard and the engine will not be able to keep up with the requested boost.

Default There may be problems, but this is the direct response from Split Second! They seem to know...

Question to Split Second ------------------------------------------------------------------

I just bought the 1.8T BCS. Should I worry about the A/F mixture being
too lean at full boost?. I live at a high altitude Denver and maybe already run a
little rich. is it likely that pinging will occur? and will the ECU programming begin
to back off the boost if the sensors detect the knocking? I don't want to slag
my motor.

Thanks

send a catalog if you have a hard copy. I saw other products that would
be helpful

Charles Gerarden

Response -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charles,

Your stock ECU provides the correct mapping at higher boost levels.
Higher flow is measured by the MAF sensor and the additional fuel and
correct timing are provided. You may encounter pinging with a full load
climbing a hill on a hot day. You might also have a problem with lower
octane fuel. In either case just turn down the boost.

Regards,
Mark

Default I can't wait for your review!

By the way if you checked some of the threads on vwvortex, you might want to use a VAG-COM to optimize the settings.

Thanks... I liked the suggestion of slotting the heads with a dremel tool.
