Default Sticky grease on front wheels?

Any idea what this is? CV boot?

Cleaning my wheels yesterday, I noticed that the two front wheels had a sticky residue on the spokes and seemed to originate from the lug nuts. I thought it was dried dirt but as I wiped, it just smeared. Had to do some rubbing to get that stuff off.

Any ideas what it could be? I don't think I ran over anything that would have caused splatter onto the wheels. One wheel I can understand, but both and only the front ones?

Looked inside the wheels and nothing of the same substance there. Strange...

Default if its dark grease, and you see it accumulating on the inside of the wheel...

then yes, CV boot. that stuff is VERY sticky. if the problem is new, its not an emergency...but i would take care of it as soon as is reasonably possible. very common problem.

Default It was darkish, I thought it was like muddy water that got on there. It was a little

sticky, as I was trying to wipe it off. Took some rubbing to clean it. It has not returned since I cleaned it yesterday. Will keep an eye on it and inspect the wheels when it stops raining.

Possible that BOTH CV boots go bad at the same time?

Default It's possible for both to fail...

However did you recently do your brakes ? Something else to consider as a source for the grease(combination of dirt and fluid)

Default Front pads are still original. Dealer recently checked pad thickness. Rotors replaced at 39k miles

due to warping.

I haven't seen any new grease on the wheels yet...so hopefully it was just running over something. Will keep an eye on it though.
