Survey please regarding radiator fan operation
As has been posted by several of us lucky few our A4's came with bad fan controllers. Originally I was told the large radiator fan on the drivers side should never come on when the climate control is set on "auto" unless the outside temp is high. Now Audi/dealer is saying that continued running at low speed is normal.
To clear this up once and for all it would help if some of you would post what your A4 does under the following conditions.
1) Climate control set to "auto"
2) Recirculate off (both A-Recirc and Recirc)
3) Temp set on both sides to 68 degrees (F)
4) Engine temp is at operating Temp
So much for the task list so.... Now if I could impose on a few of you to open the hood (or bonnet as the case maybe) and post one of the following:
a - fan is running at low speed
b - fan is not running at all
c - fan is sreaming at high speed (welcome the the "your fan controller is bad" club if you post this status
d - fan cycles on and off with the A/C compressor at low speed (the option that you would think would make sense)
Know this is asking a lot but still getting the run around from Audi and it is really frustrating

Re: Survey please regarding radiator fan operation
I tried this tonight, because I've been wondering the same thing.
Outside temp: 44 F
Larger fan seemed to be running at low speed (wouldn't call it screaming), and the smaller fan was on as well. I didn't stick around too long to see if it cycled on and off w/ the compressor, but it didn't within the first 60 seconds or so.

Same with me. 34 F and fan running at low speed.
So far, this sounds like the "normal" response (although there's only been 2 replies). The fan was definately not screaming. When in the car, I would not know that it was on. I watched it for about a minute, and it did not cycle.
I guess you should only start to be concerned when the fan starts to kick it into high gear and leave it there (even though it's a cool day).
