Does anybody know how accurate the fuel gauge and trip computer (miles to empty) really are? I know on my VW, once the low fuel light came on, the fuel gauge would be at the first of the 3 red lines, and in about 10 minutes it would be all the way down to empty. I'm certain it was designed to get to empty quickly to freak you out. I know this because when I'd fill up, there'd be at least 2 to 3 gallons left in the tank despite the fuel gauge being all the way at empty. Does Audi program their fuel gauges and trip computer the same way?

Earlier posts indicated that the gasoline cools the fuel pump located in the bottom of the tank.
So you need a couple of gallons to keep the pump cool. This comment came from one of our most trusted forum advice givers.
There have been other comments about damage to the fuel pump and injectors if you run out of gasoline. Thus, the car tells you you're out of fuel when you actually have a couple of gallons left.

No, it's not my intention to overheat the pump or clog the injectors. I just like an accurate readout. I work 8 miles from home, when the TC reads 0 miles and the gauge is pinned on E, and I'm running late to get to a meeting, it's nice to know that I can still get to the office and worry about a fill-up say at lunch or something.
I guess this whole problem would be alleviated if I didn't have such a hatred for filling gas. I can't remember the last time that I only put in like $10 or something. I always go full to empty, full to empty...
