Default VAG code clearing question

OK, I finally got my VAG figured out again, and was able to run a fault code check on my headlight auto levelers, which have produced an annoying yellow symbol on my trip computer for a couple months now. Sure enough, there was a fault code on the computer, which read something like "Open or short to B+..." I don't remember the rest, and i would have copied it except my inverter quit out and my computer died before I could save it. Anyway, i did get a chance to clear the code, and now it finds no faults and the symbol on the computer is gone. My question is, does this mean the problem is fixed, or did I just fool the car into thinking it's fixed?

Default i guess my confusion is...

if there is a problem, why won't the light and code just come right back again after clearing it initially? doesn't the system constantly check that stuff to make sure it's working?
