The wires are severed (2 brown wires) and my car starts then stalls.

ECT sensor maybe? That would cause that issue.

Thinking about it I felt dumb because the wires on both sides of the connector and I have never seen a coolant sensor that had a pigtail then connector, HOWEVER I am still going with ECT because it appears to be 4 wire on one side and 2 on the other, So this is a intermediate harness and the split junction because instead of 2 sensors they just send the same sensors readings to the ECU AND the gauge BRILIANT!

BUT This is still just a complete guess. If there wasn't a foot of snow on top of my car and 9 degrees outside I'd go look.

Which engine is this?

What color of each and how many wires are coming into the firewall side of this connector?

I would hazard to guess someone plugged in a spare connector end in order to the preserve vehicle side connector and keep it waterproof. Also look around the general area including below power steering reservoir for an open / another floating connector. It is also possible the firewall side of this connector was spare and not in use from the factory. Audi uses brown wire for ground and I could be wrong but I don’t recall a double ground wire connection in this area. Since the wires are damaged anyway then I would cut them back / seal them to prevent an accidental grounding, at least until you figure out what this is for.
