What I do...
and it all depends on what type of jack you use...
I use a 2ton floor jack, BTW.
If you desire to jack stand your front end, I place the floor jack @ the rear and jack the car up at the designated jack point to the highest level you can...
What you will notice, is that the front will also elevate to a height high enough to get the jack stand in place (at the front designated jack point).
Carefully now, let out the floor jack to lower rear. Be extra careful here as the weight will shift to the front as it starts to rest on the front jack stands.
The height of the jack stands w/ car elevated in this manner is enough to crawl underneath comfortably.
Hope this helps, careful and good luck.

I've found that the stock jack doesn't raise the car high enough...
for the jack stands. Therefore, I had used the stock jack to get it started, then switch over to a floor jack to lift it off the ground (placing it next to the stock jack). Once lifted high enough, I would then place the jack stand next to the floor jack and lower it down slowly.
It's a very tight fit, but you can get both of them next to each other. I've just replaced my regular floor jack with an aluminum racing floor jack (lower height), so I shouldn't need the stock jack to start the lift. =)

I wouldn't use the stock jack for anything other than emergencies
imho it's nowhere near stable enough to support the car, certainly not for underbody work or placing jackstands...hell, i've got a 2.5 ton floorjack that I usually keep in my trunk, because I just plain don't trust the Audi jack, and I don't want to have to wait 40+ minutes for roadside to come and change my tire...
