I have icelink and it's been great.
One compact module that requires all of 10 minutes to install. The hardest part for me was getting the radio out but if you have the keys, that part should be easy too.
As for your questions:
1) No display on the Audi headunit.
2) I got mine directly from Dension (densionusa.com). Heard rumors that Best Buy carries them now too...
Judging by the number of users here who have blitzsafe, I'm sure it is just as good of an alternative but I have never personally used it.
Good luck!

The Blitzsafe adapter doesn't provide power to the iPod and doesn't turn it on/off...
Also, with the IceLink, you can change tracks (and playlists w/ the IceLink Plus) via the head unit while maintaining full control through the iPod.
Yes, Best Buy does sell them for $200. I purchased one for my GTI there. Great product, imo...

How do the iPod's work in the car anyways?
Do you change the track on the iPod or like you would normaly change the track. And off topic... anyone wonder why do we have 3 ways to change the track but we dont have a repeat botton

If you use Icelink, you can do it from either, depending on how you set it up
There are 2 modes:
1) icelink UI: allows you to control the Ipod only through the Audi radio. Track +/- switches track and Disc +/- switched between your first 5 playlists (Disc 6 is reserved to enter the Icelink menu). This mode changes the ipod screen slightly. The font is a little smaller and shows track/artist name. The clickwheel is locked but will allow you to turn on the backlight.
2) iPod UI: You can still control track from the radio but everything else is done through the standard iPod interace.
In either mode, the iPod pauses when you exit CD Changer mode and powers off after it is paused or when you turn the ignition off. Very seemless operation.
You can switch between the two as needed through the icelink menu. I typically leave mine in Icelink mode.
