Ok I tested the A4 2.0 Turbo Avant ... nice ride, nice pick up acceleration .... but you can hear the turbo growl.

Is the A4 3.2 much more quiet?

The sound doesn't bother me, but it did somehow bothered my wife.

Default tell her to set in the back :-)

I would think the 3.2 (minus turbo)would be a deeper richer tone compaired to the 2.0T.

My car is very quiet when running at a steady speed. Can't see spending the extra bucks for little more than potentially different acoustic properties... especially considering the current energy situation.

Default The 3.2 has a sporty growl to it

Of the four A4's that I have owner the 3.2 has the loudest exhaust note. I really like it but my wife actually likes our 2003 CVT with 3.0 V6. The 2003 is very quiet just the way she like it.
My business partner is always stating the A4 during accelerating sounds like a truck compared to his Camry. It is all in what you want. I like it

Default Get this

You want a non-sporty car to satisfy your wife. Sporty cars by design will have engine/exhaust sounds in the vehicle.

Have fun.

Default It is.

But the clatter of the overperforming little 2.0 soon just becomes part of the character of the car. Besides, at cruising speeds you really can't hear it anyway.

I'm happy with the performance and fuel economy, so a little coarseness in the engine sound is not that big of a deal.

I haven't been in one, but I bet there's no engine noise inside...

Default Growl?

That has to be the quietest turbo I've ever heard.
I can't imagine anyone having an issue with the A4's sound.

Take her for a ride in my 03 Cobra with the eaton blower, headers, etc, etc...
When you can't hear the radio over the exhaust and blower, THEN it's a little annoying =o)

The A4 is one of the quietest most civil vehicles I've ever driven, yet still lets you feel connected with the road.

If "dead to the world" is what you prefer, maybe a toyota avalon will fit?

It's interesting to see different points of view, because they vary so much.
What's whisper quiet to one person is annoying to another.....
