Anyone know what's involved in adding a trailor hitch to our cars for a bike rack? Expensive?

Default I have seen it done on B5's and I was not a fan of welding ANYTHING

to our cars. Better off getting a roof system and taking it off when not in use.

Default Avant?

The Avant can get a bolt on version. Otherwise if you have the sedan I wouldn't hitch it.

Avant Hitch

Default Skip the hitch. Go for roof.

I've been dealing with my bikes and vehicles for years.

Do not get a hitch-based bike rack. You will scratch the crap out of your bikes, and likely dent and scratch your car in the process.

Get a set of Yakima or Thule racks. There. You are done.

Default Mine comes off in minutes...

But then again, I have an Avant with the Factory rails.

There are basically 3 things: Feet, Bars, Carriers.

The feet attach to the car, normally you need 4 of them. The bars span the feet, normally 2 of these. Finally, your attach the carrier to the the bars. Your bike is held by the carrier.

On my Avant, the feet attach directly to the factory rails. This takes me about < 10 minutes with a cordless drill.

I have the "Criterium" (598) carriers and the
450R Rapid Crossroad feet / RB47 Rapid Load Bars.

The Thule site can help you pick the parts you want. If you don't like Thule, Yakima is a solid choice.

Thule racks

Default Why not just get a roof rack? Much easier imo

You can take it on and off as needed

Default In my case, trying to make it easy for my wife to load her bike as needed.

I've bought a Thule T2 to attach to the hitch. The hitch is attached with the exhaust pipe mounting bolts and to the towing loop at the rear of our Audi's.
