Was considering an S4, until.........
I drove an A4 S-line 3.2 6MT last night.. Damn, for the savings in the vehicle and fuel over time, that is a pretty sweet ride.. 3.2 sounds REALLY good too.. Tough decision ahead of me I guess..

^ I agree - at least drive a 2.0t
I didn't think I'd ever buy a 4cyl, and everything I heard about the 1.8t being the most overworked and strained turbo4 carried into a bias against the 2.0t....
Until I drove one I bought it that afternoon.

Re: ^ I agree - at least drive a 2.0t
Appreciate the input, but after having a few different chipped 4cyl turbos, looking for some good ole normal aspiration.. Plus, v6's and v8's just sound better..

i have the 3.2 and im going to say get the 2.0, i mean of course if you dont want to mod anyhting go for the 3.2 its a fun ride but i wish i got the 2.0 to leave me a window for modding.

unresponsive? Compared to a 997 maybe. My S4 smokes my B7 A4 in every way.
I think the potential of the B7 A4 is great with chip/coil overs/brakes or even a future bigger turbo. The A4 is lighter. My A4 is 100% stock but even with mods I can't imagine it will be in the same ball park as my S4.

that was my impression, it felt unresponsive and heavy, ( it's just an opinion) Everyone has something they like, for the money it just wasn't justified in my opinion. You put an intercooled supercharger on it and now I am interested.

Had the same dilemma...
Was looking at a demo (~6K miles) Imola B6 S4 avant. I also don't like 4 cylinder turbo engines -- too "boy racer" feeling for me, especially for a 40K+ car. Drove the 3.2 and loved it, it was perfect.
I figured out the cost of ownership over time for the S4 -- i.e. fuel and insurance -- and the 3.2 came out way on top. In my case, since the S4 was a B6 and a demo, sticker prices were the same.
I'll give up a tenth of a second (claimed) 0-60 and some torque (on paper) for the smoothness and the exhaust note of the V6. Real world performance (i.e. everyday driving situations) between a chipped 2.0t and a 3.2 is still about the same, with any advantage in driveability (not straight line acceleration) probably going to the 3.2 because of the more linear torque curve.
Considering the 3.2 was $4K extra -- and a chip costs $500.... $3500 doesn't seem like a bad price for the great exhaust note, the extremely subtle power delivery, and overall refinement and smoothness.
And really important to me, you drive the car as it was tuned by the engineers in Germany -- not some dudes in Florida or someplace.

If your going to test a 2.0 modded- try 3.2
with 10,000 miles or 15,000 KM
It takes that long for engine to break in.
I also think the ECU does a forced break in (reduced power), but I have no proof of that.
Note I took 3.2 over S4 for same reasons as you.
Also like other here, I found S4 unresponsive in handling and had bad understeer in snow.
There is also a $6,000 4WD / V8 tax in Ontario, and those lieing bastards ain't getting anymore of my money !
