Loud grinding noise when trying to cold start? HELP
I've had my 2008 Audi A4 Quattro for about two weeks now.. and it hasn't given me any issues. but yesterday when I went out to try and start it (it had sat for a whole day and it was about 25F outside) As soon as i tried starting the car it made this terrible grinding sound and did not want to turnover. I immediately called my mechanic and he said it sounded like it could be the starter.. not sure
I tried it a few more times and then was finally able to get the car to start. Once it's on it seems to be running fine.
I've attached a video of the sound, and any suggestions as to what this could be would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Based on your description, the grinding sound you heard when trying to start the car, particularly in colder temperatures, does indeed sound like it could be related to the starter motor. Cold weather can sometimes exacerbate issues with starter components, such as worn-out gears or a failing solenoid.
Since you mentioned that the car eventually started after a few attempts, it's possible that the starter motor is experiencing intermittent issues, which can be common as components wear out over time.
I'm glad to hear that once the car is running, it seems to be running fine. However, it's still advisable to have your mechanic inspect the starter system to determine if any repairs or replacements are necessary to ensure reliable starting, especially as colder temperatures persist.
If the issue persists or worsens, it's best to address it sooner rather than later to prevent potential future breakdowns or inconveniences.
