Multitronic gear switch while moving
Hello everyone, new one here!
So I got my very first car- Audi A4 2.0 TDi with Multitronic gearbox (B7-2005). I really enjoy it, but today I was driving and started to think.
-Is it safe to switch from D to S while driving at high speed (or moving at all)??
-What would happen if I would be smart enough to engage in "P" or "R" while moving fast?
-Is it safe to switch from D to R (or R to D) while the car is still moving really slow, like 5 km/h or something like that?

1. Yes, you can go between D and S all day long whenever you feel like it. Those are just different shift programs. D keeps the engine revs lower for better fuel efficiency while S keeps them higher for a more responsive driving experience.
2. You would cause some serious damage. This question is along the lines of what would happen if you drove your car into a wall. It's a free country, you can destroy your own property if you feel like it :-). There are generally some safety mechanisms that make it harder to engage P or R while driving.
3. You should always come to a full stop before engaging R. A little bit of rolling can be handled, but yanking the car into reverse while you are still moving forward is not really a good idea, just like driving into a wall and bringing the car to a sudden stop isn't.
