Engine is mis-timed. That would be my guess.
It is very-very easy to install the timing belt off by one tooth. Did I say very?
I doubt it is mis-timed via the timing chain.
Good luck to you. Let us know what the fault turns out to be. Haya....
As I recall from doing the timing belt on mine a few years ago, when the lower cover is removed the timing mark goes with it so I needed to make my own mark on the main crank pulley and engine block. When fitting the belt to the lower pulley it seems like you need to go one tooth negative, then when the tensioner is enabled the lower crank moves back to make it perfect. That's what I recall.
You know you could easily check by taking out the number 1. spark plug and rolling the engine over to find actual top dead center. (Use a dowel or something to put down the plug hole to visually confirm TDC.) Then check the cam pulley marks. Do they line up? If yes the engine is timed okay. If not.....
I've done four timing belts on my various cars over the years. (Lots of motorcycles but those are easy.) I've had to go back and redo the job on one of them 'cause I got the belt set one tooth off. That's only 75% correct. C- grade. Yikes.
