Problems shifting in zero degree weather
It has been near zero for the last week or so. I am having trouble getting it into first and then it keeps popping out of second. How concerned should I be? Surpisingly I have not had any problems starting the car. Back when it was in the thirties I would have to crank it two or three times before it would turn over.

I've had similar troubles with getting it into first, am told it's normal. Popping out of second...
I have not experienced. That's a bit odd. Maybe someone will chime in about that, or worst case ask your dealership.

ALL manual cars are the same way... every car I've owned is clunky when very cold.
After I start the car with the clutch in, I shift between first and second a few times to loosen up the gear box, and then I shift slowly.
And if you have a startup problem, let the car in the "on" position for a second before starting it. It will completely pressurize the fuel system. I have NEVER had a startup problem in any temp (below 0 degrees currently) using this method.

Re: Problems shifting in zero degree weather
Have an 06 model with the same 1st gear issue. Very hard to shift into 1st when its cold and every now and then even when its warm, I can't shift into 1st and have to pull off in 2nd. Maybe the synchronizer? Unfortunately wasn't able to replicate the problem with the dealership.
Don't have the popping out of 2nd issue.
Do have the issue of starting in cold or moist weather, like Audi2.0TFSI said, no issues after the engine pressurizes.
