I was considering that as I'm not that great at grammar :)
I can never actually remember the cut off from my friend and I to my friend and me ... other than I goes in the beginning of the sentence and me goes in the middle

Here's a trick
Take off "my friend and", and it will be immediately obvious.
eg:
"My friend and me went to the auction last Saturday"
try dropping out the friend, and this way it's:
"me went to the auction last Saturday"
As is immediately obvious, should be "I went to the auction last Saturday" so when the friend is with, it's "My friend and I went to the auction last Saturday".
Here's another:
"He was going to tag along to the movie with Bob and I."
"He was going to tab along to the movie with I" hmmm should be me so... correct is:
"He was going to tag along to the movie with Bob and me."
Make sense?
