Default I used a USB com to turn off the orange signals and belt noise.

you need the other cable to read blocks.

Default I used a HEX-USB+CAN interface (USB equivalent to HEX-COM+CAN)

Default Check out vag-com.com website...

there is a manual that explains how to use the cable options they offer. So far, i've done the same as JohnStr - additionally, cleared a check engine fault this weekend (see earlier post)

Cable Source: ross-tech.com for one source for a description of the cable types

Default it is when you can physically monitor things that the car is doing..i.e air/fuel, rpm, speed, etc..

with the USB cable it doesn't allow you to monitor anything really, it just allows you to change the headlights and seatbelt chime. So it is essentially useless with this car and you need the Hex-USB+CAN interface.

that I can program things like one touch open...windows rolldown with remote etc..without the hex-com but in order to scan for codes and such I need the hex-com

Default I don't claim to be an expert but...

You can do some cool stuff with the vag-com. Modifying localized settings is pretty cool. Being able to understand what kind of fault codes your car is throwing is pretty cool also (helps keep the dealer honest???)

There is an article that takes you a bit deeper into the using vag-com. Check out this link, it offers some insite for how to manipulate parameters via the KWP2000 protocol.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2181084.phtml

There is quite a bit of vag-com related info on this forum. Also, there are some interestsing open-source projects that I've been meaning to follow up on - if only there where 26 hrs in a day
