Tiptronic Issues & Thoughts
I have a new 06 2.0 T with Tiptronic. I test drove obvilously before I purchased, and thought the auto was great. Im not so enthused now. Wanted to know other thoughts. First, it shifts I think too quickly from 1-6 at low speeds. At 45 MPH, im in 6th gear. Maybe this is for good mileage, but I think it bogs the engine down if you try to accelerate. Sport mode does the opposite, waits too long (higher revs) to downshift. In sport mode, it NEVER automatically shifts from 5th to 6th even at 80 MPH. I can do it with with the paddles (Sline), and it stays there, but not on its own.
Suggestions? Software update??
Thanks

I had a tip in my ol' 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro ...
and it was very slow. However, in sport mode is was much better (but it was a 5 speed auto).
For my current A4 I got the stick and LOVE IT!

My A4 is over 4.5 years old and it's never been driven in Drive
Drive and Sport suck... Tiptronic is easy and better than both. Still it can't compare to a stick or a sequential gearbox, but I couldn't get the stick when I got my car and the DSG wasn't out.

I think it's just about right
Naturally, if you want to row your own, the 6sp is really the only way to go, for now.
Everything you said about the normal mode is pretty much right on. It's geared for good economy while maintaining decent performance. It accomplishes it's goal really well.
Sport mode can be almost too agressive (if that's possible)
95% of the time I leave it in "D".
When I need to get up and go, I put it in "S" until I'm cruising and then slip it back in "D".
For those times I feel like really driving it hard (I'll save you guys the trouble... yes I mean "steering it hard" :-P ) "S" is great.
About the only time I routinely use the Tip is driving in snow so I can hold a lower gear to keep the revs up a bit.
Personally, I think it's a great automatic transmission.
Anyone who tries to say that it's a substitute for a true manual tranny is lying to you.
I've never driven a DSG but I've always read that it's the best of both worlds.

I've never driven a car with that trans...
I bet that I'd like it but not as much as a 6spd manual. Right now I prefer less weight and cost.
Don't get me wrong, there will come a day when I will not want to have to shift all the time and something like the SMG II will become my new favorite trans...
