Lamp came on today for the first time ever at 120,000 miles. Took to Audi dealer today as the Manual directs and was told it would cost $350 just for the onboard diagnostic test which would be applied to needed repairs. Seems like a lot for the range of possible causes which can range from minor to serious/expensive. Any advice?

If you plan on owning the car for the distance, get a scan tool so you're not giving away money needlessly. But without that scan, there's zero idea what the problem is and what you might need to do about it. Even with a scan log, there might be question and actual troubleshooting might be necessary. But you can get no where worthwhile without a scan first.
