Default A4 for Christmas

Getting my wife a new A4 for Christmas. Car is at the dealer and will be delivered on 12/23 with a big red bow on top. Car is spec'ed as follows: Monza Silver over Black interior, Prestige, S-line sport package, 6 speed, grill strips, and all weather mats. I'm getting the dealer to swap out the summer tires for a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS, since it's already started to snow around here. Other than a careful inspection and making sure we get the iPod cable, is there anything else in particular I should look for at delivery?

My wife is coming out of a B7 A4 2.0 TQ with 6 speed, so I don't think it will take much getting used to for her.

Nice! Monza would have been my choice had I *had* a choice.
I don't think there's anything in particular to look for...

Good idea about switching out the tires. Weird to have snow coming tomorrow -
Way too soon in the season!

BTW, which dealer & how was your experience?

Audicare? Unless you plan on doing your own scheduled maintenance for cheap, most on this forum would say it's worth it.

Don't forget the 5th door. =)
I wouldn't waste your money on Audicare if you can do the work yourself.
You'll end up paying 3-4 times more for the same maintenance.

Get the Audicare and a Clearbra. My car is only 10 months old and already has lots of rock chips on the hood and bumper. I wish I had gotten the clearbra when I bought the car.

Audicare is a very good value for several reasons (perhaps somewhat based on your dealer):

o All scheduled mntce is no charge.

o Either they will come to your house or office and pick up your car, leaving you with a loaner OR you can drop off the car and get a loaner (usually a new or newer version of your Audi); your car will be returned to you washed and vacuumed (Audicare customers get first preference, too, in my experience).

o If you need ANYTHING in-between service intervals, there is never a charge, within reason, even for things that are supposed to be chargeable (I chalk it up to customer Good Will).

o Anytime you want, you can get your car washed and vacuumed.

o Every fluid (excluding fuel) will be topped off at any time (and a quart of the syn oil isn't cheap).

o The dealer will have all your records and if you keep the car out of warranty, you will more often than not "win" if you need a repair beyond 50,000.

o The dealer typically will say your car is worth more to a subsequent buyer if they [the dealer] can produce the service records.

o If you lease the car for 50,000 or fewer miles, you literally will buy only insurance, gas, tires and license plates -- no hassles of any kind. And, "peace of mind," too.

o If you place any kind of value on your time -- either a dollar value or from an opportunity cost value perspective -- you can certainly put your time and treasure to more [or better] gain than maintaining your $40-$50K A4.

I own my company and I can use my time to far greater purpose than maintaining a car -- moreover, my wife works for a Fortune XXX company, some 55+ hours per week (plus she teaches law school), and there is probably no reasonable amount of money you could pay her (or me) to perform auto maintenance (and what happens if you screw up? the fix will NOT be free). And, the cost of the tools and the diagnostic equipment that is used even for routine dealer mntce makes doing your own maintenace only "practical" for the idle rich, or for those who for some reason consider auto maintenance a, er, spiritual or cathartic experience.

If you love doing your own maintenance for whatever reason (therapy perhaps?), I take it all back -- I would just ask if you could not put your time to more productive (or fun) use; and, accept your answer without further attempt to convince you to attempt to expend your time on alternate pursuits.

As I like to say: Drive it like YOU live!
Me? I like driving it and letting the dealer keep it in good working order (at no extra charge).

Yet another masterful write-up by markcincinnati . As I've said before, "It's always a pleasure reading your threads/posts", and I always come away a little more wiser.

I made a typo here and luckily caught it before releasing. I had written "and I always come away a little more wider." Ya, that too .

Cheers

- Maintenance at no charge? Don't you PAY for Audicare?

- All the maintenance to my cars is done by me and random 17 yr old porters don't drive my car at anytime.

- Not sure what you mean by "ANYTHING".

- I hand wash and vacuum my car myself in a heated garage. Again no 17yr old porter is running it through a car wash and wiping it down with a dirty towel.

- Toping off fluids is a minimal expense at the most. I pick up my syn- oil at Wallyworld for dirt cheap and our A4 and Q5 use the same fluids.

- I keep records of every gas fill up/oil change/ tire rotation or any other maintenance. I have a binders that list in chronological order every penny I have ever spent regarding each car.

- I have always purchased my cars which costs me significantly less than leasing in the long run. I tend to hold on to my cars for a long period of time.

- My time is well spent maintaining my cars. It gives me peace of mind to know that everything has been done the right way and I am blessed with the ability to do it.

- Sorry you feel you're above auto maintenance but to me it is both relaxing and gratifying. The cost savings of not buying Audicare or paying other people to fix or wash my car buys me more than enough tools to get the job done.

I'm not a mechanic by trade but enjoy it as a hobby. Turning a wrench doesn't make me better than anyone else and neither does owning your own business. Just because I desire to do my own work doesn't mean I have more free time than anyone else. It just means I make time to do it.
I was simply stating a fact that I would pay 2-3 times more for maintenance if I purchased Audicare. If you want to pay for it and don't have the ability or the desire to do it yourself for whatever reason ...so be it.

I think you missed his point. Although you are doing the work yourself and maybe saving half the price, you are paying for the rest of it with your time. It takes time to research most of the maintenance that goes in with Audicare, and even after thorough research (good luck finding this part out) and execution, you will still miss things that a trained Audi technician will catch.

We are all enthusiasts here and the majority of us are hands-on and involved with our vehicles just like you. But theres some things worth more than paying that extra for Audicare, like my time. I have done the 15k mile service on my previous car myself and although that car is nowhere near the level of my current A4, it was more work than it was worth. I would rather spend that time doing other things. Audicare allows you to do that.

And you missed MOFSTEEL's point, he CHOOSES to spend his time maintaining his car. Would you tell him he was wasting his time if he'd said he was spending time at the gym every day? This is no different. He chooses to spend his maintaining his car, others choose to spend it doing other things.

He doesn't want Audicare. Let it go.
