So when you're in the measuring blocks and have three of the blocks up, you can click Add to Log and you get the log contents as you've posted here. But just posting the log of a series of clicking Add to Log doesn't provide any context. Don't just post the log here, use the contents of the log to post an informative set of information and context. As is, all I really see is "wow, you got problems".

I would have wanted to see blocks 18/19/20 with engine off. That's your starting point, battery state. Alternator blocks are irrelevant with engine off. We have one capture of that. I presume it's engine off since the voltage is low and the current flow is negative. -27.5A, that's a lot. Did you leave the climate control system on, the DRLs one, the door open, and the radio playing? When I do VCDS work, I turn off the DRLs, turn off the climate control system, shut the doors, mute the radio. I show -10.5A or so. The battery is very low, state of charge is 40%. You should put it on a charger. Expecting to drive around enough to get the alternator to bring it back up to 85% is not the best plan. If it's an AGM battery (I presume it is given the low internal resistance), make sure it's an AGM aware charger. Correct charging process is not the same for AGM vs standard.

Once you had engine running, then another log of 18 to see the voltage and current flow. No need to log 15 or 16, just look and see if the values are fine. I would have watched 18, 14, and 26 with the engine running. What does the BDM say is happening at the battery (block 18 voltage and current), what does the J533 say is happening at the voltage regulator (block 14 and 26). Does the information look good. You logged 26 once, and the values are odd. 0A current, but 127.5 Nm torque and almost 13kW output? Likewise, you had one block 14. J533 said it was specifying 15V, but had no values for field signal or field current. So what voltage was 18 showing at the battery when the engine was running? If it wasn't close to 15V, and was the same as with the engine not running, obviously the alternator is doing nothing. Is it because of the alternator or because of the voltage regulator? Or maybe wiring; the alternator housing should show continuity to the battery negative post. And the B+ output post on the back of the alternator should show continuity to the battery positive post.

Sorry for my insufficient information. Learning on many levels all at one. That first log was actually with the engine running. So a little explanation is in order. Car has been charging all week, verified with a multimeter each time we started it. 20 minute drives to work and back and then a trickle charger on it at night. Each morning the charger said it was charged. Charger is good for ACM. Not sure if the alternator is charging like its supposed to, but the alternator is putting out amperage. Saturday morning it was still charging, drove it a total of 3 hours with 5 or 6 stop/start cycles over the course of the day. Never did check it again. hooked the VCDS up to it this morning and it was not charging. It had been on a trickle charger all night again, but charger said it wasnt fully charged.

The first log I sent was with the engine running. Here are some new numbers. First set is with the ignition off and engine off. Second is with it running. Headlights, radio, HVAC, etc are all off with doors closed in both sets.

This is with the engine running. From what I see, the car is calling for output from the alternator, but its not giving it. The measurements from block 001 show the voltage dropping after the engine is started. The information, or lack-there-of in 15 and 16 leads me to believe that the car isnt communicating with the alternator. Going through the rest of the blocks seems to agree with that. Im not sure what to make of blocks 21, 22 and 23. I see that there is a small increase in block 22 input and drop in the QCA, so does that also mean that the alternator isnt really charging and the car is running off of the battery?

No problems. It's a learning curve. To go over the blocks again, 1 is the term 30 and term 15 as seen at the J533 in the dash. This is the unit that the J367 on the battery negative post reports to, as well as the unit that controls the voltage regulator on the alternator. Term 15 differs from term 30 in that it comes from the term 15 relay, vs direct from the battery. If you were to open the door and connect to the car (you have to open the door or unlock the car or so something to wake the J533 or it won't respond) and read block 1 without turning on ignition, you would see term 15 as 0v.

Blocks 14-16 and 26 are pointless unless the engine is running. Blocks 21-23 are about energy management, not particularly useful specifically to your issue of battery not charging. The blocks you care about are 18-20 regarding the battery, and 14 and 26 regarding the alternator (though as pointed out, only if the engine is running). Thus you see the 10.6v commanded output when the engine is not running; the value is pointless as the engine is not running.

So let's look at the first set, ignition on engine off. 12.2v and 54% SoC; so the battery is not at the preferred charge level (85% SoC). Only an 8.4A draw on the battery, that's really low; I suspect my higher draw is due to all the MMI 2G High equipment in my car. But it's not any particularly bad case here. Then you start the car. The voltage is still the same as with the engine off. That's a really bad sign. The current draw is really low I would think for a running engine, only -15.7A, but it's a draw, not a charge. You should be seeing some + value representing current flow into the battery.

Clearly your alternator is not working. When you go to the J533 (CAN Gateway, address 0x19) in VCDS, there's a button for fault codes. There are no fault codes? There should be a lot of fault codes. You have three considerations here. Either the J533 cannot communicate with the VR over the LIN bus as it should. Either the VR is not doing the job it's commanded to do. Or the alternator is just broken. Have you checked the overrun pulley? That's what broke on mine. Take a stick (any NOT METAL) with the engine not running and the serpentine belt removed and put the stick into the windings so the alternator cannot spin. If you spin the pulley, it should free spin in the direction opposite normal rotation (counter clock wise). It should not spin (because you blocked the movement of the rotor with the stick) in the direction of normal rotation (clockwise). If the pulley free spins in the normal direction, then it's not spinning the rotor anymore. You're getting nothing from the alternator because the engine is not spinning the rotor anymore.

If the pulley is fine, all you can do it dismount the alternator and go have it and the VR bench tested. One or the other is not working.

Do look at the back of the alternator; make sure the B+ wire is actually attached.

Did a fault scan yesterday and forgot about it. Did another one now to get fresh data. Knowing my luck, most of this isnt relevant, but I copied it anyway. I am aware of the lean code and I have been having issues with the passenger door locking. The other engine code and the others I dont know about. The CAN bus fault makes me think its not seeing the VR maybe? The fault in the HVAC makes sense. All of the dates shown line up with the last time the car just died on the road.

Ive had the alternator physically tested and Ive checked it out multiple times each. if none of this leads to a clear solution, I will take it back out and test it and make sure it is physically good again. Everything is terminated as it should be.

Thanks for all of the help and dumbed down explanations. Helps a lot. Happy reading....01-Engine -- Status: Malfunction 0010

There's your whole problem. So the reason the J533 isn't showing the output statistics from the VR is because it's not getting any communication with the VR. The J533 is wanting to tell it to go 15v output, but it can't.

At this point, you have to look at the plug on the VR on the alternator. There's only one pin, it's the LIN bus line that the J533 and J367 (battery monitor) share with the VR. The J533 is the master, the BDM and VR are slave components. Check voltage between the pin and a good ground point; you should see it moving around as an average value as the LIN bus bounces back and forth between low and high value. Maybe 5v or so? Display blocks 18/19/20 while you do this; that will ensure there's LIN bus communication going on (the J367 has to send the values to the J533 for it to send them to the OBD port). If you're not seeing any voltage, there's likely a wire break between the J533 and the VR. If you are seeing a variable voltage value, the wiring is probably fine and the issue is likely the VR.

The wonder is when the LIN bus is not connected, the VR should default to some kind of output voltage. Yet you still see no voltage output lift (the voltage is the same as the battery voltage, engine on or off). Thus I wonder if the VR is controlling the alternator correctly; are the brushes passing exciter current to the magnets so they actually do their thing, etc. The alternator+VR as a whole in your car is clearly not working correctly, assuming the wiring is good.

I will run that test tonight and get back to you. That battery still wasnt fully charged (per the battery charger) this morning, but I hope to be able to actually get a log of everything when it is charging today or tomorrow.

Thanks for the help!

Ok, battery is charged per the trickle charger. I have included a log with all of the points for 3 scenarios. Key in/ignition off, ignition on and finally engine running. All of these are with headlights off, radio off, HVAC off, drivers door open and dome lights on. I also did the test with the LAN wire on the back of the alternator. With the car at idle, I was getting 11 volts consistenly, so no idea what that means. I will try to include a graph from that process. everything from 18, 19 and 20 appeared to stay the same while i was testing the LAN with a meter.

I wonder if doing something with the plug addressed anything, because it's working fine now:

20:43:15 Group 018: Power Supply (Battery)
14.100 V Battery Voltage
11.9 A Battery Current
27.0°C Battery Temp. (Estimate)
29.0°C Battery Temp. (Ambience)

20:42:44 Group 014: Power Supply (Generator)
14.50 V Generator Voltage (specified)
48.4 % Dynamic-Field Signal
1.250 A Field Current
3.00 s Load Response Time

The time stamps are too far apart, but the voltage actual and commanded are similar, battery current is a positive charging value, and we have field statistics from the VR.

The two trios to bother adding to log are 18,19,20 for battery and 18,14,26 for alternator (no point unless engine running). If you need to do the others, make it 1,15,16 (no point unless engine running) and 21,22,23. But again, those data are not particularly valuable for this issue.

You see how with term 15 inactive (ignition off), there's no values from anything such as the J367 (no values in 18/19/20). Only block 1, which is values direct from the J533 itself. So it's not operating the LIN bus until term 15 is active.

So I should have been more clear in my post from yesterday. Messing with the plug and putting the meter on it took place after all of these logs. I graphed 18,19 and 20 while I did it and nothing changed, so I didnt log it, but tried to attach the graph, but ran out of time to figure it out.

The first time I had the engine running yesterday it didnt charge. Values reflected that as well. I shut it off and started it up again right away and then it started charging. That's when I took the last set of numbers.

This is typical. Get a full charge on it and it will be fine for 4 or 5 days then it will crap out again. Let it sit on the charger for a couple days and get a full charge, then its fine again.

I'm not sure what to say then. There's a clear working vs not working indication, but as for a trigger condition, I don't know. Is the wiring sketchy, is the VR sketchy, is the alternator sketchy. It could even be flaky wiring at the starter; the large wire from the battery positive goes to the TV22 block (center of plenum chamber, where the positive jump start post is) then to the starter then to the B+ post on the back of the alternator.

I think if you have a situation where your voltage is low again with engine running (11 or 12v, vs 13 or 14v, just measure it across the jump start posts under the hood), you know the alternator is not functioning. First, I'd check voltage between the B+ post on the back of the alternator and the housing of the alternator. Make sure you at least measure the battery voltage drop there. If not, there's a wiring issue. (be care touching that B+ post not to ground that lead against the alternator housing). If that's good, unplug and replug the 2-pin plug to the VR. See if that restores operation. If not, then there must be something unreliable about that VR would be the best guess.
