From my experience, and what I've read here, if you're not getting close to invoice, you're not pushing hard enough...
Some people negotiated deals below invoice, but this is not the norm. Most close-to-invoice deals talked about here have been in the $300-$1000 over invoice range.
Some will argue that $1000 over isn't close to invoice, but to everything is relative.

I got $350 below invoice on an Avant. I had one dealer straight up telling me on the phone they they would sell me cars at invoice. But I felt they were kind of shady so I used that to negotiate the price down at a dealer I liked better.

I'm looking for an avant too, so that's good to know. However, it's not on the dealer lot, so they may be eating some costs to get their hands on it. (Wait, did I just imply a dealer wasn't trying to squeeze every last cent out of me?)

What are you looking for? I've got a Meteor Premium plus A4 Avant with Nav and the sport package if you're interested. We ship and pick up at the airport.

Dealers can sell below invoice all day and still make a profit. My car MSRP was 35,280, Invoice 33,148, and I paid 31,662.
Invoice includes nonsense items like dealer association, local advertising, and destination charge. The delivery from the factory to the dealer is included in the MSRP. The destination charge is really a "charge at destination" to pad the dealers profit. It also allows them to exclude that "cost" from salesmans' percentage.
Audi claims no holdback, perhaps true, but VW ponies up about 2% per car if sales targets are met, and a lot of dealers get about 400 to 1000 per unit "extra" for coop advertising. Usual coop split is 50-50, but the dealer can earn this higher percentage by making smart advertising buys and meeting sales targets.
There are other discounts available, like Audi loyality cash, Audi Club money, Supplier discounts (if you company sells anything to Porsche, Audi, or VW), fleet discounts (if your company has an agreement with Audi), Foreign Service pricing, and European Delivery (a fat 5% of MSRP)
If you do get a great deal, put between 100-200 in the pocket of your salesman. He will appreciate it.

MSRP $40,150
Paid $37,673
Invoice $37,400
(paid $273 over invoice)
If you pay anywhere between $300 below to $300 above invoice, you are getting a great deal.
Pay less than that, it's a steal!
Pay much more than that, and you could 'probably' do better.

Based on the above figures you bought at MRSP - 6.2%.
I bought mine at MSRP - 11%. The dealers are reckoned to be running up to 13-14% margins.
Now my bad news : Even after my discount, I'm still paying £32k for a 2.0T S-line Avant which is around $47.5k :-(
