I am not that familiar with your car model, but that picture looks like an LCD dot-matrix display to me. It isn't the back-light that is failing, but probably the electrical connection between the display controller and the display pixels (the little tiny squares). You can see on the left-hand "LO" indicator that not only are some pixels blank when they should be lit, but the upper right corner pixel is lit when it should be blank to form the "O".
My original '98 B5 A4 had a similar problem endemic to the driver information display in the center of the instrument cluster. The solution was to pull the cluster and replace that module. Eventually, someone started selling rebuilt modules and rebuild services, but most cars I saw eventually just kept their rotted displays and people went on with life. I am a little disappointed that Audi is still unable to make an LCD panel that can survive the lifetime of the car. It makes me wonder how badly all the newer MMI and virtual cockpit displays are going to rot out and leave people with crippled interfaces to their cars, now that real buttons and indicators seem to be going out of fashion.

Look up the part number of the module and check ebay or the internet for salvaged modules pulled from wrecked cars. The module is simple to replace and has only two connectors on the back, IIRC. You can look up the part number here:
