Default Intermittent smoke problem

Hello,
We have a 2008 A4 2.0T Audi with 93,000 miles...we are the second owners.
The issue is, about 4 or 5 times in the last year, but especially in the last 3 months, we will be driving and it will start to cut out and then a HUGE plume of smoke comes out the back. Each time has gotten progressively worse. Each time I have pulled over and turned the car off, then restarted it and it was ok. Except the last time, i had to run it about 10 minutes before I was getting no smoke. While this is happening, I can put it in neutral and rev it and its fine(except for the last time). The only common denominator has been it has been on warm days...(75-85 degrees). We have to put a qt of oil in about every other month.
If any one has experienced this, or has any thoughts I would be greatly appreciative.

Thank you,
Tom
