Default MMI & usb sticks

I have just purchased an A4 B8 model & have got in glove box a cable for an ipod or IPhone & a cable for usb drives. I have plugged in usb drive cable & screen comes up with media active but when I connect usb stick nothing happens. Does this need to be activated by audi or am I doing something wrong?

No idea about the USB but why not just use an SD card? I think they were standard on most A4s.

SD slots are on the MMI 3G cars (2010 and later for US). I use a 32GB FAT32 formatted USB stick just fine on my MMI 2G 2009.

I have got a sd slot on my stereo but as I only have Micro sd cards and an adaptor it doesn't work either but I have loads of usb sticks with music on them. So if I format them in Fat32 they should work ok?

FAT32 is the correct format (also for SD-cards). The first model years only supported SD and not SDHC. SD cards are normally limited to 2GB.
There are also limitations on the number of songs in total and in each folder. Should be stated in your owners manual. (I don't believe music played as a faked telephone call would be something I would want to listen to.) Try an SD card (in FAT32) and files in MP3 format.

I think I will have to try that as I tried a 4gb usb stick formatted in Fat32 & mp3 format and it didn't work.

Well I don't know why it doesn't work.
I have tried usb sticks. 2 different ipods. one classic & one touch. admittedly I still haven't tried sd card but I have yet received a 2gb one I have ordered.
The display says media is detected but when I click source to choose media. Cd shows up orange & sd shows up grey but Ipod or usb shows up white.

You need to format the media as FAT32 and then create a playlist for the songs you loaded onto the thumb drive or SD card. There are several audio formats that can be recognized by the MMI unit and they may be listed in the owner's manual, but mp3's will definitely work. You can do all of this on your PC using the appropriate adapter. You will have to edit the playlist so it points to the root directory and not the drive letter assigned to your memory card by the PC. Just open the playlist in Wordpad and do a Find and Replace on your PC to delete the drive letter from the path names. I use an freeware app call Playlist Creator and it works great. I've attached a sample playlist as a reference. I had to add a .doc extension so I could upload it. A playlist will normally have a .m3u extension.

I don't have AMI (and I have another media system), but I play MP3:s from SD cards without the need for any playlist so I don't think that is the problem.
To OP: When you say "white" do you think the USB selection is greyed out?
The sticks you have tried are they different models/manufacturers?
With IPOD I assume that you replace the AMI->USB cable with the AMI->30pin cable?

No the sd card is greyed out but usb is white. Yes I have the 30 pin cable but reading on here there are a few different ones. My car is a 2009 A4 with 2g mmi. No buttons by gearshift.

The cable I have has a blue boot on It. Do I need a different colour one?
